pairings

I'm loving a new little boxed book set that I've been working on called Pairings. The "pairings" are a series of paste papers and sewn handmade papers, where I've played with patterns, repetition and color. I'm using a nifty structure that Julie Leonard taught us at Penland this summer, the glue-free (!) drum leaf. Will add more shots as the books and box are completed, but for now, here are some of the papers I made:

These are wonderful. I can't wait to see your books. I took a class from Laura Wait the summer-before-last at Penland and learned to make a drum leaf binding, and I loved it. But, we glued the pages in the text block back-to-back to create a heavy-duty text block (with a total of very few pages). Does this make sense? Does Julie Leonard's approach differ?

Sounds like the drum leaf structure Julie taught us. For these particular books, she showed us how to adapt it a bit to "drum" all 4 edges so the art is sandwiched between 2 window pages acting as a frame.

A picture's worth a thousand words - the books are done (except for text), so I'll post them as soon as I can.

Kelly, these papers are gorgeous! I CAN'T WAIT to see the photos of your books.

I've studied with Laura Wait, too. The main difference in her approach to the drum leaf binding is that she applies a small strip of adhesive along all four edges (spine, fore edge, head, and tail), while Julie limits adhesive to the spine and fore edge (at least that's my take). The Hand Painted Journal on my Etsy site was made with Laura's paste painting and drum leaf binding techniques.
