What the Water Gives Me (February 2012)
Traditional Chinese medicine uses five elements to organize natural cycles, one of which is Water. Water occurs in Winter, as a prerequisite for rebirth in Spring. It is a time of stillness, rest, dark and quiet - yet powerful forces are at play, reseeding and replenishing beneath the surface. The trick is to allow such deep rest to happen. After 2011's overseas move, end-of-year projects, and visitors, I fell into Water necessarily and easily this year. This is my ode to Water, inspired by Florence and the Machine's song, What the Water Gave Me.

Bloom Where You're Planted (January 2012)
This spread was inspired by my recent paper flower installation. Also, after six months of living as an expat, I'm starting to feel settled. Tiny shoots are re-growing to ground me here. That, and I wanted to learn how to make some simple pop-up structures.

Stille Nacht (December 2011)
Our first Christmas here in Germany was spent visiting a lot of Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets), where we drank much gluhwein. We found several that felt like living Christmas cards, all softly twinkly, snowy and charming. The gold paper used inside of this spread wrapped a purchase. Silent Night has been a favorite since childhood.

"Friends Across the Water" (July 2011)
After living in Germany for one month, I feel both the distance and support of friends back in the US. This piece is a little reminder of why we made this move, inspired by lyrics from Paul McCartney's Hands Across the Water.

"Uprooted" (March 2011)
When I learned that our relocation to Germany was official, the enormity of our decision really hit me. Before getting fully excited about our move, I made a list of things that I needed to do before leaving, none of which had to do with packing or the logistics of the move.

"Leap Year" (December 2010)
2010 was my Leap Year, even though the next official one isn't until 2012. The leaps I took were largely of faith, driven by need, and grounded in determined action. A January skiing accident put the whole year into motion, as I navigated surgery, jurying into a competitive artist co-op, leaving a lucrative career for art, and deciding to say yes to an overseas move with my husband.

"Earth Angels" front cover (November 2010)
In March of 2010, I decided that I was ready to begin educating myself about what it means to consume meat. I enrolled in a class, Vegetarianism for Yogis, at my regular yoga studio because I knew I'd need the encouragement of others to face what I was about to learn. In addition to guided reading, balanced group discussion, and sharing lots of resources, we watched several movies about the industrial farming system in the US. The documentary Earthlings was all it took for me to know that I'll never eat animals again.

"Friends" (October 2010)
Inspired by Leslie Patterson-Marx's theme of friendship for her round robin journal, this piece is simply a tribute to a beautiful poem, an image I love (who happens to look a lot like Leslie), and the joy of using my new 1968 Smith Corona manual typewriter.
